AFI #6. Reagan quoted it in a 1985 speech. Eastwood's softest, deadliest threat.
Clint Eastwood's soft-voiced threat as Detective Harry Callahan became the defining anti-hero taunt of the 1980s. The line was written by Joseph Stinson and delivered with such icy menace that President Ronald Reagan famously quoted it in a 1985 speech to the American Business Conference, threatening to veto a tax increase. It ranked #6 on the AFI's greatest quotes list and propelled "Dirty Harry" into the permanent vocabulary of American toughness, machismo, and law enforcement mythology.
