Karl Lagerfeld served as creative director of Chanel from 1983 until his death in 2019 — 36 years — reinventing a dormant brand into the world's most valuable fashion house and simultaneously running Fendi for 54 years, the longest creative partnership between a designer and house in fashion history. He was the first designer to successfully revive a 'dead' fashion house and the template for every subsequent luxury revival.
