Created circa 1874 at the Manhattan Club in New York City, this rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters cocktail is served in a coupe or martini glass with a Maraschino cherry. Sophisticated and spirit-forward, the Manhattan helped define the American cocktail canon and remains a staple of upscale bar menus globally. It is 20% sweeter than the typical spirit-forward cocktail and was developed nearly 45 years before the Negroni.
