The Scream (pastel) — $119.9 million (2012)

Edvard Munch's 1895 pastel version of The Scream sold at Sotheby's New York for $119.9 million — at the time the most expensive artwork ever sold at auction. The work came with a note in Munch's handwriting describing the "infinite scream passing through nature" that inspired it.
