Integrated Information Theory (IIT)

Giulio Tononi's framework proposes that consciousness corresponds to integrated information (Phi). By this measure, current AI architectures score near zero, but future neuromorphic designs might achieve higher integration. This theory is more quantifiable than Global Workspace Theory Applied to AI, and a 2023 simulation showed that even optimized AI reaches a Phi value less than 0.01, far below the human brain's estimated 10,000.
