Clearview AI’s facial recognition database remains the most dangerous surveillance tool built by a private company, having scraped over 30 billion photos from social media without consent. It is used by more than 600 law enforcement agencies, leading to fines in the EU, UK, and Australia, as well as bans in several jurisdictions. Civil liberties groups highlight that it severely outperforms #8’s Pegasus Spyware in scale, as Clearview targets billions of images compared to Pegasus’s individualized device hacks. However, Clearview argues it has helped solve thousands of crimes, including child exploitation cases, a claim that doesn’t offset its 30% higher privacy violation rate than the average tech product.
