Canned Hunting (Captive-Bred Lion Hunts)

South Africa’s canned hunting industry breeds more than 8,000 captive lions each year specifically to be shot inside fenced enclosures, a practice that even many hunters reject as unsporting. These hunts cost clients around $40,000, but the lion has no escape route, no fair chase, and often minimal wild instinct—conditions that the African Lion Working Group calls a ‘grave ethical violation.’ Compare this to fox hunting with hounds, which at least involves free-roaming quarry over open terrain; canned hunting removes every pretense of challenge and often releases lions that have been hand-reared from cubs. South Africa’s own Department of Environmental Affairs has proposed banning captive lion breeding for hunt purposes by 2025, yet the industry remains legal in 2024, generating roughly 60% of all lion hunt revenue in the country.
