Vietnam War (1955-1975)

The Vietnam War killed approximately 3.5 million people and ended with North Vietnam's unification of the country under communism despite US military intervention — the first major military defeat in American history. Its consequences: the War Powers Act limiting presidential war-making, the end of the military draft, a generation of American distrust of government and military institutions, and a cautious interventionism that was eventually overcome by the Gulf War.
