Thirty Years War (1618-1648)

The Thirty Years War, fought across Central Europe with unprecedented brutality, killed approximately 8 million people — a third of the population of the German states — but produced the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which established the concept of state sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs that became the foundation of international law and the modern nation-state system that still governs global politics.
