Pink from crushed red foraminifera shells. Wetter sand = deeper pink. 5km of rose-tinted shore.
The 5-kilometre beach along the eastern shore of Harbour Island in the Eleuthera district of the Bahamas gets its distinctive blush colour from crushed fragments of red foraminifera β single-celled marine organisms whose shells wash ashore and blend with white coral sand to produce a consistently pink hue. The colour deepens in wet sand and under overcast skies, making it paradoxically photogenic in less-than-perfect weather. The Atlantic side has modest surf; the calm Harbour side suits small children. Best visited December through April.
