Eastern & Oriental Hotel, Penang
The E&O was built in George Town by the Sarkies brothers, the Armenian hoteliers behind Raffles in Singapore and the Strand in Yangon, and opened in the 1880s. Its seafront colonial frontage survives, and the guest list from its early decades includes Somerset Maugham, Noel Coward and Rudyard Kipling.
