Gunung Irau Mossy Forest, Cameron Highlands

The ridge hike to Gunung Irau, topping out at 2,110 metres, passes through Peninsular Malaysia’s finest example of upper montane mossy forest, a primeval landscape that is 30% denser in moss coverage than the trails at #5 Gunung Brinchang. These ancient trees draped in moss and cloud, with Nepenthes pitcher plants the size of human fists, create an otherworldly atmosphere. The summit frequently disappears into mist within minutes of clearing, adding an element of mystery to the trek. Over 150 species of orchids root on every horizontal surface, making this a botanical photographer's paradise. The hike typically takes 3-4 hours from Brinchang, with steep sections that test endurance but reward with unparalleled views. Unlike the more accessible Gunung Brinchang, this trail demands preparation: sturdy boots and a rain jacket are essential. The mist rolls in about 60% of mornings, sharply limiting visibility, yet the experience of walking through a cloud is unforgettable. This adventure-savvy route challenges hikers more than the average highland walk, with an elevation gain of 400 metres that ensures a rewarding workout.
