Malaysia's original backpacker beach, Cherating on the east coast has retained a laid-back, alternative character despite the development that has claimed other Pahang beaches. It is a key leatherback turtle nesting site and hosts the Club Med Cherating resort alongside simple guesthouses shaded by coconut groves a short walk from reliable surf breaks. Compared to Batu Feringghi, Cherating is 60% cheaper for accommodation, and turtle nesting success rates here are 30% higher than the regional average.
