Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, premiered in 1607, single-handedly invented opera as we know it, with over 400 documented productions since. His use of recitative and monody set a template faster than the average Baroque innovation cycle by nearly 30 years. Monteverdi's structural influence surpasses Vincenzo Bellini's on Vincenzo Bellini's formal development by a wide margin.
