Endgame is what happens when a studio spends eleven years and twenty-two films building toward a single afternoon, and the afternoon actually delivers. Its $1.2 billion global opening weekend is still the biggest in film history, and the film went on to earn $2.799 billion total — briefly the highest-grossing film ever made, before Avatar's 2019 China re-release took the record back just 48 days later. No other franchise has managed a payoff on this scale, largely because no other franchise had the patience, or the box-office confidence, to make audiences wait a decade for it.
