Dominant in the air, commanding in the tackle and a natural leader, he captained both club and country to unprecedented success. He won four Champions Leagues and four La Liga titles with Madrid and led Spain to World Cup glory in 2010 and two European Championships (2008, 2012), earning a record 180 caps - the most by any outfield player in European football history, which is 55 more caps than the average Spanish outfield player.
