Michael Jackson’s 1983 single was the first video by a Black artist to receive heavy rotation on MTV, breaking a racially discriminatory programming policy that had excluded Black musicians from the network. Jackson performed the moonwalk for the first time while singing it at the Motown 25 television special, and it reached #1 in 10 countries simultaneously.
