Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967) was co-written by Lennon and McCartney and builds to a 45-piece orchestral crescendo that producer George Martin described as ‘organized chaos.’ The BBC banned it for alleged drug references — Lennon’s response was to perform it at every opportunity — and Rolling Stone ranked it among the five greatest songs ever made on their 2021 list.
