Inter Milan 1963–1965 — Grande Inter

Helenio Herrera's Grande Inter won back-to-back European Cups in 1964 and 1965 and three Serie A titles—1963, 1965, and 1966—using the most disciplined version of catenaccio ever deployed. Their defensive mastery is epitomized by conceding only 20 goals in 30 Serie A games during the 1964–65 title-winning campaign, a rate of 0.67 per game that is cheaper than the average for Serie A champions during that decade. Sandro Mazzola, Jair, and later Javier Zanetti formed attacking partnerships efficient enough to secure European glory, making Grande Inter the benchmark for Italian defensive perfectionism against all rivals, including the better-known defensive sides of #1 AC Milan.
