His 3,509 strikeouts set the all-time record that stood for over five decades until Nolan Ryan surpassed it in 1983. The Big Train threw 110 shutouts, a record that remains untouched to this day. Johnson remains one of the few pitchers to win an MVP-type award twice before the modern BBWAA award began in 1931.
