Gion Matsuri

Gion Matsuri stands as Japan's most iconic festival, with its month-long July celebration drawing over 2 million visitors annually. The towering yamaboko floats, some weighing up to 12 tons, parade through lantern-lit Kyoto streets in a tradition spanning over a millennium. This enduring cultural spectacle features 34 intricately decorated floats during the main Saki-matsuri procession, each handcrafted without nails and costing an average of ¥50 million to build.
