Theron gained 30 pounds, wore prosthetic teeth, and shaved her eyebrows to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster (2003). She won Best Actress at the Oscars — one of the most dramatic transformations in the award's history. Before Monster, she was known as a beautiful action star (The Italian Job, Reindeer Games). After, she was an actress who happened to be beautiful. The transformation was so complete that audience members didn't recognize her. She followed it with Mad Max: Fury Road ($375 million), Atomic Blonde, and Bombshell. Theron proved beauty is a costume she can put on or take off.
