GLP-1 Receptor Agonists for Neurological Disease

Semaglutide (Ozempic) was designed for diabetes, but large Scandinavian registry studies have found lower rates of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease diagnoses among GLP-1 users compared to non-users, prompting active research into a possible neuroprotective effect. Phase 3 trials testing GLP-1 drugs specifically for Alzheimer's prevention are underway. If the association holds up in controlled trials, GLP-1 agonists could end up treating obesity, metabolic disease, and neurodegeneration with a single medication class.
