When They See Us
Jharrel Jerome's Emmy. Television that changed real-world outcomes.
Ava DuVernay's four-episode Netflix series on the Central Park Five is one of the most emotionally devastating limited series ever made for streaming. Jharrel Jerome earned an Emmy for portraying Korey Wise in the final episode. The five men depicted were exonerated in 2002 after the real perpetrator confessed, and New York City settled with them for $41 million in 2014 — both years before the 2019 series aired, which instead renewed public attention to a case many had forgotten. The series uses dramatized interrogations to drive home the systemic failures that led to the men's wrongful convictions.
