Bungee jumping in Queenstown is the birthplace of commercial bungee jumping, with AJ Hackett launching the world's first in 1988 from the 43m Kawarau Bridge. The Nevis Bungy at 134m remains New Zealand's highest jump, outscaling #2 by offering a 29-second freefall that dwarfs the 8-second drop from the Kawarau Bridge. More than 500,000 jumps occur annually here, making it 40% more popular than similar activities in Rotorua. The original site still operates with 43m of pure adrenaline, a benchmark still unmatched by newer competitors.
