Gran Hotel

Gran Hotel borrows its bones from Downton Abbey — aristocrats, secrets below stairs, a country house with more skeletons than guests — but sets it in 1905 and centers it on a young man investigating his sister's disappearance at the hotel where she worked. It's darker than its inspiration and more plot-driven, trading gentle social commentary for actual murder mystery. Three seasons of escalating blackmail and scandal that never quite let the central mystery go slack.
