Cashback, Coupons, and Marketplaces Are Three Different Tools

It's easy to lump every app on this list together as 'shopping apps,' but they fall into distinct categories that solve different problems. Cashback apps (Rakuten, Honey's Gold Rewards) pay you back a percentage after you buy somewhere else — they add on top of a purchase you'd already make. Coupon-testing tools (Honey's core function, Klarna's price-drop alerts) try to lower the price at the moment of checkout. Marketplaces and retailers (Amazon, Google Shopping, ASOS, Wish, Farfetch, Instacart) are where the purchase actually happens. Vinted is different again — a peer-to-peer resale marketplace, not a discount layer on new retail at all. Stacking a cashback app on top of a marketplace app is normal; expecting one app to do both jobs usually leads to disappointment.

Why 'Cheapest' and 'Best' Aren't the Same App

The apps at the discount end of this list (Wish, in particular) win on price by cutting out something else — shipping speed, return flexibility, or quality consistency. The apps built around curation and authentication (Farfetch, ASOS, Vinted's buyer protection) charge more, in effect, for confidence that what arrives matches what was promised. Neither approach is wrong; they suit different purchases. A phone case is a reasonable gamble on a discount marketplace. A designer bag generally isn't.
