Fritz Lang's 1927 German expressionist silent film was made for 5 million Reichsmarks, making it the most expensive film ever produced at that time. It was the first film inducted into UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2001 and remains the foundational template for dystopian sci-fi cinema.
