Sade Adu
Sade Adu's band has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, which makes her, by any commercial measure, the most internationally successful Nigerian artist there has ever been — and she did it inside a genre, sophisti-pop, that she and her band basically defined. 'Smooth Operator' and 'No Ordinary Love' haven't aged the way most 1980s hits have; the elegance in her voice was never tied to a trend. Born in Ibadan in 1959, she's collected four Grammys and an OBE, and decades later her catalog still sells consistently in the UK and US, not as nostalgia but as a genuine cross-generational reference point. Nobody else on this list has matched that combination of scale and permanence.
