Shopify went 'digital by default' in May 2020, closing its offices permanently and rebuilding around remote work rather than treating it as a temporary measure. In 2022 it replaced its traditional compensation bands with Flex Comp, letting employees choose their own split between salary and equity, and in January 2023 it deleted every recurring meeting of three or more people from company calendars.
