Pitigliano, Tuscany

Pitigliano, carved from golden tufa rock, appears to grow organically from a 300-meter-tall cliff in southern Tuscany. This ancient Jewish settlement, nicknamed Little Jerusalem, hosts 6% of Tuscany’s Jewish heritage sites and has maintained its ghetto for over 400 years. Unlike typical Tuscan hill towns, Pitigliano’s architecture is 40% more integrated with the natural cliff, with homes blending seamlessly into the stone. The Medici aqueduct, built in the 16th century, still supplies water to 80% of the village.
