Grumari Beach

Grumari Beach offers the ultimate urban escape, located 25km west of downtown Rio inside a protected nature reserve. The 2.5km stretch of golden sand sees an average of only 50 visitors on weekdays—30% fewer than #7 Arpoador’s busiest afternoons. Because it’s reachable only by car or taxi, with no bus lines, the crowd stays thin even on weekends. The water is unpatrolled and often has strong rip currents, so swim only near the lifeguard post open from 10 AM to 4 PM. Grumari’s native dune vegetation and restinga ecosystem host over 200 bird species; you might spot toucans or sea turtles nesting from November to March. The beach has no kiosks, so pack supplies. Entry is free, but parking costs R$10. For true seclusion, Grumari’s 1.2km northern stretch remains empty most afternoons—a 5-minute walk from the main area rewards solitude with waves that break left and right.
