10,000 Athenians defeated Persia. Saved democracy. Gave us the marathon race.
When 10,000 Athenian soldiers defeated a Persian force twice their size on the Marathon plain, they didn't just win a battle — they saved the experiment of democracy. Had Persia prevailed, the cultural foundations of Western civilisation — philosophy, theatre, democratic governance — would likely never have taken root. The Athenian messenger Pheidippides allegedly ran 26 miles to Athens to announce the victory before dying, giving us the marathon race. The clash produced one of history's great military upsets and preserved the world that would eventually produce Socrates, Plato, and the rule of law.
