Palenque

Emerging from the Chiapas jungle, the Classic Maya city of Palenque contains the finest architectural sculpture and hieroglyphic inscriptions in the Maya world and the tomb of King Pakal — discovered in 1952 beneath the Temple of the Inscriptions — that rewrote global understanding of Maya burial practices. The limestone temples are extraordinarily intact and the surrounding jungle provides an atmospheric context impossible at more touristed sites.
