Dunhuang Mogao Caves

The Dunhuang Mogao Caves, hidden in the Gobi Desert, preserve the world’s largest repository of Buddhist art across 492 cave temples. While Luoyang’s Longmen Grottoes focus on stone sculpture, Mogao’s 45,000 square meters of murals and 2,000 painted statues form an unrivaled painted chronicle of Silk Road culture. The Library Cave alone yielded 50,000 manuscripts dating from the 4th to 11th centuries, including the world’s oldest printed book, the Diamond Sutra (868 CE). Each cave averages 90 square meters of fresco, demonstrating a sustained artistic output that rivals any religious complex in China.
