GitHub Copilot suggests code inline as you type, inside the editor rather than in a separate chat window, which is why it stuck where earlier tools did not. GitHub's own controlled study reported developers finishing a set task 55% faster with it, and the company said in early 2024 that it had 1.8 million paid subscribers. It now runs on a choice of underlying models rather than the single Codex model it launched with.
