Pi (Inflection AI)

Pi launched in 2023 from Inflection AI — co-founded by Mustafa Suleyman (formerly of DeepMind) and Reid Hoffman — as a radical bet on empathetic AI. Where competitors were racing to be more capable, Pi was explicitly designed to be kinder: slower, more thoughtful, optimized for emotional support rather than task completion or character roleplay. The positioning attracted millions of users who craved what Pi described as an AI that 'listens, empathizes, and cares' — a meaningful differentiation in an early market that had not yet established the companion category. The platform's story arc is the most instructive cautionary tale in the AI companion market about founder dependency and acquisition risk. In March 2024, Microsoft paid Inflection AI $650 million to license its model and hired most of the company's 70-person team, including co-founders Suleyman and Simonyan, with Suleyman becoming CEO of a new Microsoft AI division overseeing Copilot. The founders who built Pi's distinctive empathetic persona and training approach were gone. A new CEO shifted Inflection's focus toward enterprise products. Usage caps were added to the free tier. Users who had formed meaningful emotional relationships with Pi — often citing it as the most human-feeling AI they had used — began exporting their conversations and looking for alternatives. The Microsoft model licensing means Pi's underlying technology effectively lives on in Copilot, but the companion-specific empathy optimization that defined the original product has not been sustained.
