Ilia Malinin's Quad Axel Bid Falls Short as Shaidorov Stuns the Field

In the men's figure skating free skate at the Milano Ice Skating Arena, Ilia Malinin attempted his signature quadruple Axel — four and a half revolutions, the only jump taken from a forward outside edge — a jump long considered figure skating's "Holy Grail" and one he remains the only skater ever to land in any competition. He couldn't land it at these Games: his planned quad loop came down as a double and he fell on both his quad Lutz and quad Salchow. Malinin finished eighth; gold went to Mikhail Shaidorov of Kazakhstan.
