U.S. Department of Energy Launches the Genesis Open Models Initiative

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched the Genesis Open Models Initiative, a groundbreaking program aimed at accelerating scientific discovery through artificial intelligence. This initiative, part of the broader Genesis Mission established by executive order in November 2025, seeks to double the productivity and impact of American science and engineering within a decade. The first model from this endeavor, Genesis-Science-1, was developed in partnership with Arcee AI, the initial industry collaborator in the program. The DOE-hosted contribution portal for the initiative opened recently, with first-round applications due by August 14, 2026, for foundational-stage contributions. This ambitious program connects the DOE's 17 national laboratories with advanced computing and scientific data resources to create powerful, transparent, and extensible AI models across various scientific domains.
